Anonymous asked: I love this blog so much. All these screens remind me of when I was a kid playing on my old computers. (Though... not so much the eroge! :B ) I love the artwork in them... this blog lets it all live on.

Hey Pal, Thanks for the kind words. Hopefully this blog’ll be more active again within the next few months?

Anyhow, here’re today’s fortunes:

Anonymous asked: Are most of the games you post images from actually fun to play or are they appealing due to the visuals and weirdness rather than the game itself?

I mean, it varies a lot on a game-by-game basis. I always really liked the command-based, limited animation “adventure game” sorta game, so at the very least any given game will be “interesting” in some quality if not “fun” for me. Or maybe I find the whole process of playing them for the purpose of posting them on here sort of fun? Plenty are pretty boring/tedious eroge but will have at least a few things about them that make them worth spending the time/effort on, others because they’re extremely atypical/creative/whatever and others for aspects like, their historical/sociocultural markers and context and etc.

I mean, this game was pretty painful to play through but it’s kind of a  PC-98 response to Myst which I find pretty neat (Here’s every screen in the game, btw). Oh, a lot of pc-88/98 dungeon crawlers are extremely awful to actually go through, like i’ve resorted to making maps on graph paper before (during periods of excessive, gross free time). But even then, I feel some sort of fondness towards the horrible time I had doing it? A good example being this (which i realize i over-reference but, I mean, look at it).

Oh also, sometimes games that I really liked end up being difficult to convey in tumblr form.

A thing maybe i should mention is that I’ve barely been playing any games for this blog (also, in general too I guess) this year, due to A)The main laptop I’ve been doing it on for the last 6 years is basically on life support, or broken in a way that makes doing this possible but extremely frustrating. B) The huge amount of backlog images/video footage that i’ve recorded/totally forgot about/haven’t decided whether or not is worth posting, in many cases. C) A string of temporary/ambiguous living situations. D) Political strife, at home and abroad. So it’s been hard prioritizing things here.

Is any of this answering your question? Did you learn anything from reading this? Does anyone actually have fun playing video games anymore?

Maybe the short answer here is “Yes, but for mostly stupid reasons.”

How have you been lately? Here’s your fortune, for old time’s sake?

Anonymous asked: Can you run doom?

probably, hopefully.

Anonymous asked: Hello FMTOWNS, Thank you for your work. May I use some images for an upcoming record? Thank you.

yeah, i mean… y’know… “go for it,” not that I have any actual authority/license for this sort of thing. you should probably email me if you need sources or information or whatever.

Anonymous asked: Near the beginning of 2014, around the time you released that PS1 rom about exploring unfinished hellscape towns, you wished everyone a happy 2014 and hoped that your own 2014 would be better than your 2013 which, IIRC, wasn't a great year for you. Would you say that you had a good 2014?

Nah, it’s been pretty awful. Let’s all keep trying to soften the blow through bad/old videogames. Let’s not talk about this anymore right now.

Anonymous asked: Two likely games I'm finding are ABC which came in english, french and arabic or one called Sakhr Dictionary that seems to have a similar color scheme but there's not too many screenshots

yeah, i briefly glanced through those when trying to figure this out last night but i don’t think those are the ones. A lot of the software published by Sakhr/Al Alamiah had near-identical menus/colors.

I dunno, i’ll try to look again later. I am pretty curious to figure this out, as that gif is one of my all-time favorites.

Anonymous asked: couldnt find the info for this: / post / 920426301 what game is this?

http://fmtownsmarty.tumblr.com/post/920426301

It’s an Arabic MSX game for learning English phrases, but regrettably I can’t remember its name. I made that gif back in in 2010 when I didn’t really have any kind of system for organizing or keeping track of things and was mostly just burning through various romsets, then forgetting about them. It came from a collection of Arabic MSX games I downloaded from Underground-Gamer (RIP) (which I had posted a link to on here around that time). I’ve been trying to figure out which one it is within that set but so far, no luck. I suspect it could be the file “m_Grammar1-1.rom” but I’m having trouble getting it to run in the MSX emulators I use.

Here’s that link again. If anyone manages to figure it out, please for the love of god let me know.
